I've read many, many Catherine Cookson novels and loved most of them but this novel just fell flat. The characters weren't very likable and seemed to have erratic reactions and behaviors. I kept waiting for some kind of vindication for the main characters as in most of Cookson's novels but none really came. The ending left you without any real feelings of resolution.

Loved the book , highly reccommend it. A typical Catherine Cookson story
It is a captivating story of a common, rough young man who is wrongly accused of molesting a rich man's daughter.
With great courage,he denies the allegation and marries her.She is disowned by her parents.
He works hard, and is able to give her expensive gifts.
The story concludes with Longfellow's beautiful poem,"I have put you fast in my fortress........",showing the depth of his love for her.
An interestig story and interesting characters. But the bottome line here is that regardless of income a person's acceptance, or non-acceptance in British society is determined by one's class. The way one's speaks is probably the first determinant followed by appearance and carriage.
Another story of the distinct lines drawn between the classes. Ms Cookson successfully as usual reveals the courage necessary to cross or mingle those invisible but so real lines. The strength of character and wisdom that evolves from long suffering gives hope to the human condition, whatever it is. This Cookson book is one of my favorites.
Cookson tends to be hit or miss with me- her writing is fluid, her stories are clear, but sometimes it seems her message and morality are just...dated. It's fun to take a look back and see what "normal" was from her POV, but its hard to relate to a book that has as its driving conflict a pregnant teenager rescued by marrying someone beneath her station... especially when the heart of the conflict is class war, not misunderstood love, or teen pregnancy. I feel like she had the wrong focus and I just couldn't connect to the story at all.
You will find The Round Tower hard to put down even for a second. All of the books written by Catherine Cookson are like that, hard to stop turning the pages. I don't know how she came up with so many ideas and none of her books are the same, at least not so far that I have read.
I give it five stars! I ordered my book from , they contracted a bookseller in UK. It was quick service and my book was in very good condition.
Catherine Cookson who was always my favorite author. I had all of her books in hard cover but had to give them away. I will be purchasing more in the near future. She writes such heartwarming books.
