This was my first by Sandra Hill. I had been putting off reading one of her stories since I learned most are fantasies. (I prefer straight historical romance.) But then I got a list from her that told me which of those she’d written were not fantasy (see list below). While this one is not fantasy, it is fanciful. And witty, at times funny and, while not a serious historical romance and sometimes modern sounding, it is also very entertaining.

Set in 952 AD, this is the story of Tykir Thorksson, a wealthy Viking trader in amber, who is sent by the King of Birka (present day Sweden) to find a redheaded witch who, the king is certain, has cursed his male part. The target of Tykir’s quest, Lady Alinor of Yorkshire has been thrice widowed and is done with men. She prefers to be left alone with her sheep. But her two ridiculous brothers want to betroth her once again, this time to a fat man Tykir dubs the Lord of Lard.

Alinor denies she is a witch and resists going with Tykir, but he gives her no choice and so she and her dog and some of her sheep follow Tykir into Northumbria and eventurally to see the king. In a clever story, Tykir comes to believe she is a witch when things happen he cannot explain.

It took me a while to get used to Hill’s style as she begins each scene with a line that forecasts what you’ll see (I thought it was someone’s thinking but it’s the narrator), but eventually I rather liked that feature. She does manage to drop in some historically interesting tidbits so that I could see she knew her subject well and had done much research for her story. The place names are all there, too. The characters are wonderfully drawn and some quite funny. Bolthor the Skald comes to mind with his silly verses.

If you like witty, off beat historical romances with extended love scenes, this is a good one. I suppose all of Hill’s may be similar. I would read another of hers, particularly Rurik’s story (The Blue Viking).

I waited months for this book to be released and it was well worth the wait! The story was touching, the characters interesting and well-developed, and it's a great way to start off the Wink and a Kiss line. I've read all the other books in the Thorksson line and knew the characters well and it was really touching to see Thork's second son finally find love. If you want a great love story read it, you won't be disappointed.
I love most of Sanda's books. I liked this one but I thought the humor was a little silly at times. The action was often inserted just to have an action scene even when it didn't really follow the plot. But I must say I did find the characters very compelling and it was refreshing to see a heroine with freckles. It was still a good read though and I will definitely pick up more of her stories. This just wasn't my favorite Sandra Hill book but I'm certain there will be more.
Bewitched Viking is a very entertaining and well written book by Sandra Hill. There is plenty of humor along with learning much about the Vikings and the Saxons. You can picture the land, sea and the people vividly and learn a great deal of the history of the Viking times. I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read more of Sandra Hill's Viking adventures!
As always, Sandra delivers her viking romance with a healthy dose of side splitting humor. The tale she weaves creates a visual motion picture in your mind that has you living it as you read it.

This is the kind of book that has you reading straight through without wanting to put it down. It will make you laugh and have others staring at you like you have lost your mind, because it is funny and fun.

A must read for Sandra Hill fans and for anyone loving the viking stories and needing a good belly laugh!
I just bought it on my kindle Sandra Hill was the one who started me reading books written in this time. That was 7 years ago and after reading each one of these book from the first to the last I have went on to others writer such as Hannah Howell, Elizabeth Holt, Cathy Maxwell, Sophia Jordan, Danielle Harmon, the list goes on and on. I am addicted to all book in regency highlander romance novels. But these books will always be a treasure to me. May God continue to bless you with much success. D.H. from New York City
I agree what makes this story one that stands out is the humor and the beautiful way that the sexual love scenes portray on the pages. I personally love when the woman characters is lack witted about sex. You don't fine this with our media freedom and open life style. The build-up in the novel is fresh and funny. Marking the couples involved more believable as they get to know each other as the romance becomes alive on the pages of the novel. Sandra Hill has a gift of creating a worthy read that you as a reader will want to finish and be up to two in the morning trying to do just that.
King Anlaf of Trondelag has requested Tykir Thorksson to bring the witch, Lady Alinor of Northumbria to him so she can remove a curse that she put on his "manroot". Alinor had been seeking sanctuary at a convent when Anlaf and his soldiers had attacked the nunnery and supposedly that was when the curse took place. With Bolthor and Rurik along, Tykir finally locates Alinor at her manor, tending her sheep. Alinor has been wed and widowed three times; married off each time by her greedy brothers for their needs. Alinor puts superstitious fears in his companions; Tykir is a little wary of her also; with her orange hair and freckles(devil's spittle); he is not so sure that she is not a witch. Alinor is forced to go with Tykir, even though she protests their accusations. The fear she instills in the men have them looking at her rear frequently for her devil's tail and covering their genitals. Of course, Alinor uses their fear to try to get even. This is a hilarious book; one of the best of Sandra Hill's that I have read.
