Ok I have had this book at least a month saying I'll read this eventually. I'm glad I did and that is an understatement. I have to admit I always read the 1 & 2 star reviews and very seldom do they even come close to how I feel about a book. With this book they are so far off the mark. It's a combination of some screwed up religious cult and a 1% MC. It is littered with a ton of Greek Mythology which I have some understanding due to private study and I have to admit to with Sherilyn Kenyons Series so this MC book for me was great. A great MC book if you care to admit it has Church, stay true to their belief system, and are true brother's who love and trust each other. It is also a great love story with The Hangman MC as Heroes at the end of this book. Cannot wait for the next one in this series. I read Tillie Cole's blog? And it said that another book may come along. I sure hope so because this could be the start of a good gritty MC Series!

It Ain't Me Babe Hades Hangmen Book 1 edition by Tillie Cole Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

I got about halfway through before I skimmed to the end, and found myself incredibly disappointed by the treatment of a sex-abuse victim. I understand it's just fiction, but the idea that love and "good sex" cures anything--whether it's a stammer or whether it's sixteen years of ritualistic sex abuse, rape, and captivity, is incredibly offensive. The author claims that she has a degree in religious studies, and that she did research on people who have escaped cult environments, but I find it difficult to believe she did anything other than read and fetishize the idea of past abuse. The main character is held captive in a compound and has been sexually abused and violently raped from the age of eight, and yet she immediately is "over" her issues once she falls in love with the main character. She offers herself sexually to please Styx, which is the only realistic part I saw in the actions of Mae. I understand it's an MC so they're not entirely on the up-and-up when it comes to maybe obtaining a therapist, but the very thought of "love cures all" when someone has been so abused is stomach-churning. It's offensive and does a huge disservice to the people who actually DID escape these situations. The book ends with the partial dismantling of the cult, and with the rescue of her two sisters. I think what's possibly even more disgusting and disturbing is that one of the girls who was the most violently assaulted through her years in the compound makes a connection to one of the most violent and disturbed men in the MC. A character called Flame engages in violent self-harm and exists to torture other individuals. That foreshadows yet another "love cures all" which is frankly horrifying. Styx keeps repeating that Mae deserves something better and that's true. She needs therapy, not getting dicked-down on the regular. I'm for exploring taboo ideas in fiction, but there's a line people shouldn't cross, and trying to claim this is in any way representative of a person who has successfully escaped a dangerous situation and was able to heal is frankly horrifying. I could not possibly recommend this book to anyone and honestly the author should be ashamed of herself.
**SPOILERS!!!***
*2.5
Let me first say that Tillie did a fantastic job writing about some very unpleasant things. Some scenes in the book were very hard to read and I did skim through it because it was too much and too real. This topic needs to be heard because there are a lot of cults who believes and practice these situations.

Back to the story, Mae’s character. I knew she would be naïve to a lot of things because of her teachings. With that being said she annoyed me from the middle of the book and on. In the beginning, I loved her character. I loved her newness to the world and how she viewed things. She was very tender and caring, but her actions and words barley agreed with eachother. I get that Stynx basically pushed Mae into Rider’s arms. Their friendship was new and maybe the friendship with Rider was what Mae needed at that moment. What annoyed me was the fact that Mae picked Rider over Stynx every single time. When Stynx and Mae became official she still put Rider first. When Stynx was beaten to death and Mae offered to bath and take care of him Rider basically went all alpha and said no and ran out, so what does Mae do, she runs after him! Seriously! The man you so call loved needs you and you went to Rider who was having a hissy fit because his feelings are hurt – unbelievable! Then! Rider basically have some chic tending to his “needs” Mae flips out and demands she leaves and then she lets Rider kiss her and begs him not to leave! I couldn’t with Mae at that point. Then the cherry on top is when we find out who Rider really is and he does the unthinkable to Mae and Stynx because he couldn’t have her. He literally hands back Mae to her abusers and what does Mae do when a war breaks out? A war that Stynx declared to get Mae back? A war that Rider started because he threw a hissy fit? She lets Rider escape because he killed one of the cult’s abusers, but lets be real he killed him to protect himself. Rider begs Mae to leave with him and instead of being disgusted of his true identity and what he did to her she forgives him and lets him escape so Stynx can’t kill him! She wanted him to have peace! Really! Here’s the kicker, when Stynx freaked out and ran from Mae before they became intimate he was approached by the club’s slut. Stynx did not touch her or anything, Mae sees this and runs. She did not talk to Stynx for a WEEK. Rider lies about his identity, talked down to her, hands her back to her abusers, takes her sisters away as insurance that she will marry the prophet and she forgives him in 5 seconds – not exaggerating. At this point, I do not know why Rider and Mae weren’t a couple. I honestly believe if Rider would of kept his identity to himself and continued to push Mae she would probably be with him. Mae’s actions killed this book for me plain and simple. Everything was about Rider’s feelings and never Sytnx’s who she claims to love and is her soulmate – yeah okay. I think Ky’s comment to Mae telling her if she considered Stynx’s feelings over Rider’s you wouldn’t be in the mess. Well said Ky!

Stynx, I loved his character. Loved his disability. Loved him in general. He saved the book for me. Granted, he was a prick to Mae at times, but I felt he had a legit reason. He was rough around the edges but cared deeply for Mae. I just wished Mae was deserving of his affection. I wished Lois lived so he could be with her, honestly, Lois actually loved him.

Overall, the story was good, but Mae’s character killed the book for me. There is no redemption for Rider’s character, but from the looks of it he will get his own book, which I will not read.
